Box Canyon with the AzLCA 3/11
The club met up at the Minit Market in Florence – good size group of 10 vehicles:
- Jeremy & Kim – 4Runner
- John & Becky Shotts – 100 series
- Walt & Tammy Phillips – 80 series
- Ron Drwinga – 4Runner
- Randy Drwinga – 80 series
- Richard Drwinga – 4Runner
- Chip & Nancy U’Ren – 80 series
- John & Michelle Bricker – 80 series
- Joe Chott & guests – 80 series
- Brad & Elaine – FJ Cruiser
Quick easy run up to the mouth of box canyon – the road was very dusty, but in good condition with little washboardng present. Picked up a co-worker of mine – Greg & his wife Tracy in their H3, along with a friend of his Donovan & Sandy in their FJ Cruiser.
Had a quick stop at the play-hill on the Martinez Cabin Trail.
The run through the canyon went smoothly until the big waterfall area. Most of group opted for the easy line up, and had no issue. Donovan attempted a more difficult line and ended up mangling a tailpipe and needing a strap to get re-situated. Unfortunately created a small traffic jam with a couple larger groups headed down through the canyon.
John & Becky and Chip & Nancy split off at Mineral Mountain Rd to get back to civilization to watch the Wildcats play. Must have been a tough loss, with the game so close.
The rest of the group headed up to Ajax mine, where stopped for lunch. After that the group head out towards Superior via Telegraph Canyon, minus Greg & Donovan who were headed back down Box to their campground.
Climb up out of Ajax was in better shape than I remember it, with only one off-camber section which wasn’t too bad. Stopped at one of the mining areas with the remains of a cabin on the way out – Joe had ice cream for the group, which is always a nice treat. Thanks Joe!
Ran into a bunch of glass bottles that had been neatly placed in the middle of the road at random intervals on the way out. Always frustrating to see litter, but to see it in that deliberate a fashion was kind of strange.
Hit pavement in Superior around 3:30pm, aired up and headed home.
We didn’t manage many great pictures, but the pics we took are available here: http://www.cryptographia.com/2011/03/27/azlca-box-telegraph-canyons-run/
Trail rating today...mostly a 2.5 with a few 3.0's.

Stuck...Part 1...sorry for my comments on the video. I just could see that this FJC was not going to climb that line. Those low-slung gas tanks are the biggest ground clearance issue on the FJC/4Runner.
