Engineer Pass and Minnie Gulch featuring the Doves Cabin (Ouray-Silverton) w'AzLCA 7/09 : Today's plan was Engineer Pass, then down to Animas Forks and finish up doing Minnie Gulch before stopping at Silverton for lunch. Oh Point atop Engineer was freezing! WINDY! Animas Forks was busy and very cool as usual. Minnie Gulch stole the show. The mines are really cool. Cabins are pristine! The high meadow was simply gorgeous. Trail rating today....2.5 with the Engineer climb a 2.5+...nothing tough.

Ophir Pass (Silverton, CO) w'AzLCA 7/09 : As typical of our group following the Imogene Pass Trail, we returned to Ouray via Ophir Pass and US550. Ophir is quite pretty, the town is simply just "cute". The pass itself is loose rock and all kinds of talus. Some find the last climb to the pass as "spooky" due to the narrow shelf road (despite it being quite easy). Thaks for leading Chip! Trail rating today? Mostly a 2.5.

Imogene Pass (Ouray, CO) w'AzLCA 7/09 : Well, after an amazing run up to Governor Basin, our next destination was the Imogene Pass Trail. Imogene never disappoints. It's wet in spots, there's some flexy places, awesome scenery and plenty of history. Today we even got hail while we were heading out of the Tomboy Mine down into Telluride. Traffic was light on the Telluride side along the shelf road..that saved time. We got even more rain down in the valley. KILLER DAY! Thanks Chip for leading. Trail rating today...mosty a 2.5 though there are a few 3.0 spots for various reasons (rocky, steep, pucker).

Governor Basin (Ouray, CO) w'AzLCA 7/09 : OK...from everything I read on Governor, we were up for an amazing run, scenery-wise. What we were not certain of was difficulty and danger. Some sites call it "dangerous and trecherous...should be avoided". Others rate it about the same as Imogene. One Colorado 4WD "expert" said our vehicles were up to it. Well, it turned out that he was correct. The road is very steep and very narrow in places though there's enough room for our bigger Land Cruisers. The narrow spots were quite scary on the way up. Going down however they were much easier as the driver can see the edge. I'll do this trail EVERY time I return to the area though on a dry day. Trail rating today...about a 2.5 with some 3.5 pucker factor in spots.

Red Mtn Mining Area (Ouray Roads #31 and #14) w'AzLCA 7/09 : On our first day Becky and I were wheeling alone. We wanted to find a mild to moderate run and inside Wells' new 4X4 book there was a new trail shown. It covered the Red Mtn Mining areas and I had never realized that these loop roads existed. So, we were off. What a treat. The upper trail had amazing scenery and the best wildflower viewings of the entire week. The mines were cool as well. Where has this trail been all my life! It was such a great treat we returned later with the group. Trail rating on the dry day...about a 2.5. Decending the upper loop in the rain...about a 2.5 as well due to excellent traction.

Chip U'ren led us through and in was the highlight of the week. Amazing scenery along with some wheeling challenges, PG is the trail to do. The bypass on the Wall is now closed so it's get up or winch up. No problems for our Cruisers. Trail rating today...mostly a 2.5 though with many 3-ish options. The Wall? About a 3.0 today. Clear Lake (Silverton, CO) 7/09 : It was a great return to Clear Lake. It's a very special place that gives one a feeling like you're on another planet. Becky and I went up on our "free day" before the group arrived. It was awesome! We took the group back days later and it was really rainy and wet. Some members said it was the most amazing place they've EVER been. One member (Bob) just came back from a trip to ALASKA in his FZJ80 Cruiser. Wow! Great place! Trail rating on the dry day...mostly a 2.5 with a couple of of 2.5+ spots. Rain on day two made some spots a 3.0 though traction was good despite the very steep grades.

Black Hills Back Country Byway and Gila Box 08/08 : OK...AZ hwys "The Back Roads" book had us out to 2 really cool drives in a row. (Total Wreck Mine and Council Rocks) We figured we'd give the "Byway" a go as well especialy since I wanted to drive this road for YEARS. It did not disappoint. In fact, it's one of the BEST drives I've ever been on. Scenery, all kinds of side roads to explore, the Gila, views are insane, and some time I must try the scary looking road up to Guthrie Peak. This trip is a must for any AZ traveller. Trail rating today...Mostly a 2.5.

Council Rocks (Dragoon Mountains) 08/08 : This trip looked really interesting in the AZ Hwys "The Back Roads" book. We were in Sierra Vista so we thought we'd go for it. WHAT A REWARD! AMAZING! Not only were the rock formations killer, but the camp spots along the way were just too cool! Then, add in the green for all the summer monsoon rains and today's trip was unforgettable! Note: This trail is now a one-way in and one-way out trail. The road ends and is closed by the town of Dragoon...no exit. We followed another way out and go really lucky as gates happened to be open. I would be we'd not get through on another day. So, plan on an in, then back out trip. It's worth every second on the trail. Trail rating today...mostly a 2-2.5.

Total Wreck Mine 6/08 : It's hot. It's Saturday. We want to take a short trip out, but to some place new. Hmmm....what was close by in that new book I bought? AZ Highways..."the Back Roads". Total Wreck Mine? Empirita Mountains? Le'ts do it! GLAD WE DID! Very cool area. EZ to get too short of one dangerous washout. We need to go back and follow the gas line road to the NE. My bet is the road joins up with the Empirita Road exit along I-10 toward Benson. The mine area was really secluded. Felt like you were in another time period. The 2 owners made $500K during the 9 years the mine was operational. WOW! Trail rating today? Mostly a 2.0 with some 2.5 spots. The "off trail" steep gas line climbs were a 3.0 with a locker recommended.

Broken Arrow and Greasy Spoon with the AzLCA 5/08 : Trip Leader: John Shotts. Last minute trip, but we still had six attendees representing a mix of vehicles. Two FJ40's, one FZJ80, our UZJ100, a Tacoma, and finally a stock LR3 Land Rover (who did GREAT by the way...VERY impressive...did you know they out-flex both the 100 and 80 series Cruisers?). It was a beautiful day weather-wise. Broken Arrow was teriffic as usual. Great scenery, some challenge and things to watch out for, and the usualy showing off to Pink Jeeps. [:>) After the Arrow we had lunch in West Sedona. Then we headed to the west end of the Pipeline-Greasy Spoon loop trail. Normally the Pipe-Spoon trail is fun fun fun! Today? BORING! OK, the scenery was awesome as usual. What was so boring about it? The challenging canyons and other tougher spots? All filled in with rock or dirt. You could have driven it in a RAV4! In any event, all the people had a great time together. We ended after the Spoon and opted to not run the 3rd trail as it was late. Chiva Falls (80 vs 100 run with Walt) 4/08 : Our good friend Walt Philips (from Phoenix) was visting Tucson along with his brother Mark from PA. Walt wanted to go wheeling so the idea was to head out to Chiva Falls and have an 80 vs 100 shootout. Walt has a really slick '96. It's 4.5" lifted, has 35's, sports a TRD Supercharger, and is outfitted like my 100 with all the armor and gear. So, at about 3" lift the 100 had the disadvantage but in the end it did quite well. The two trucks were very comparible capability-wise. Walt's 80 had the adge in the articulation department due to the front live axle vs my IFS. The goal today was to shoot videos when possible rather than pictures. We though videos would tell the story better. One video we DID'T take...our race onto I-10. Walt has a unique 80. It's blown and has been re-geared to about 10% lower than stock. Of course, my truck has the V8, HOWEVER....it's mis-geared due to tire size and the lack of a re-gear. It's 12% higher geared than normal. This gives Walt's truck a 22% power advantage gearing alone. Would the 100 blow him away with that V8 or not? NOT! The 80 jolted from the line with those gears and then the supercharger kicked in. By 40 MPH he was 2 truck lengths AHEAD of the 100. WOW! GO WALT! I could see what I feel in the 100. Off the line the gearing makes it sluggish! Once Walt had the 2 length lead, the trucks ran the same. I think had we a kept going I would have caught him. One last note....approaching the trail we pulled off onto a steep dirt hillside to air down. In 4-Hi the 100 climbed up it with lots of power to spare. Walt? He couldn't make it and had to shift into 4-Lo. GO FIGURE!

Box and Telegraph Canyons with the AzLCA 4/08 : Trip Leader: John Shotts. What a cool turnout of Cruisers! Represented were FJ40, FJ55, FJ62, FZJ80 and UZJ100. It doesn't get much better than that! The weather couldn't have been better either. We took off from Florence and down they dusty Price Road. 11+ miles of dirt later we aired down at the start of Box Canyon. We were stoked as the Box was running! Yes, water was trickling all the way through. It was running enough just to keep the tires slippery though we all made it through without issue. After Box we figured we'd see a lot of Taco's due to their annual event in the area, "Arizona Rocks". We took a few minute side trip to the play hills. There, drivers picked their poison choosing from which line to attempt. Don't miss the videos from the hills shown below. Next up was continuing on north up the Box Canyon to the main obstacle of the day. While not difficult the rocky climb looks tough to the eye. Here we encountered the most traffic and took turns with Taco's going up and down the rock. Our next turn up the trail would be onto the Ajax Mine Road where we would begin the long ascent up to the Arizona Trail. While climbing toward the mine, the wheeler usually gets a peep show down into the canyon where the modified vehicles run the main Ajax Wash. Today, even with the Arizona Rocks event going on....NOBODY WAS DOWN THERE! Bummer! We took a lunch break at the mine overlook, had our club meeting, and avoided the bee hive at all costs. From here the scenery only gets going. Up and up and up. Wash out and wash out and wash out. Then the TOP. WOW! View to the west and view to the east. Killer! Then, the descent. Flowers, flowers, rocks, rocks......it just kept getting better. Eventually we wound up in Superior on the pavement which ended the trip. I decided to take the scenic way out from the trails end to US 60 so people could air up. At least that's how I recollect it. Some said I got lost while exiting us all through various local neighborhoods. I knew where I was going! [:>) Denial! Great day! What a killer group of folks! Trail rating today...mostly 2.5 with a couple of 3.0 spots...great for any Cruiser. Thanks all for coming!

Rice Peak w'Expedition Portal 3/08 : Trip leader: John Shotts. Bobby: THANKS FOR THE INVITE!. What a beautiful day outside. Bobby from Expo Portal is just a great guy. We had fun despite the non-4-wheeling west loop which was our way down from the top. They must keep grading that thing! Boo! WE climbed Rice via the very steep east loop. Switchbacks and washouts were aplenty. The last VERY steep and loose climb to the Peak was handled easily by both trucks. I locked the rear to save my tires. Bobby's XJ had a limited-slip rear diff though he was right behind me. Way to go Bobby! Hopefully we'll see you again out there and soon! Trail rating today...Half the trip is a 2.5, the east loop ascent is up to a 3+, just like the last mile up is to the summit.

Table Mesa Road (FH41...New River Canyon) Christmas 2007 : Perfect day! 50-55 degrees. Sunny. We were all alone so we took it slow and easy. It was out first time on this trail since owning Land Cruisers. Memories of my old old Mazda MPV 4WD van and the lemon 1997 Ford F150 4WD came back alive. I remembered spots where the MPV struggled (1992-1996) to keep going. I remembered the place where we seen the dead cow in the rain (1995). Today we had a taste of why we like Land Cruisers.....plush, safe, reliable and point-and-shoot (though this is hardly a difficult trail today. We faced a trail that I always wanted to do though from afar it looked too scary....a shelf road with HUGE drop-offs. Turns out the Powerline Road was wider than expected. While the top was a bit narrow it was nowhere near as bad as I thought nor as I've run elsewhere. I'd recommend this trail to anybody looking for killer scenery and intense solotude. It runs from Fossil Creek Road just west of Childs and clmbs to the northeast where it links up at AZ260 between Camp Verde and AZ87. Distance was about 14 miles. Travel time was about 2.5 hours. We took a mostly easy trail that on this date was really overgrown. The brush wasn't bad though the amount of two-track road was immense and with weeds 2-4 feet tall. This made road watching tricky. You can find the route to this trail in the Backcountry Adventures Arizona 4WD book. Route following is easy IF you follow the book to a T. Enjoy! Roklimo runs the LEFT side of Three Feathers!! (on the Chiva Falls Trail) : SPECTACULAR! (once I completed the climb) The left side of Three Feathers is a truck eater! We've seen so many vehicles on TWO wheels, their sides, and their rears on this line. Being much more difficult and dramatically risker than "The Step" on the Charouleau Gap Trail, I was really scared to take my nice Cruiser up this side. Brian got me to do it. Thanks again Brian (aka goodtimes) for convincing me to, then spotting me up this 4.0 obstacle. Brian was the same buddy who finally got me to try this wild line in my '93. I learned even more about the UZJ100 capability. I'm solidly convinced that there's very little the 80-series has over the 100 on any trail (except for size). When I take these extreme obstacles on, the 100 suceeds with every bit of ease as my 80's do. More than ever...the UZJ is in my opinion the best Land Cruiser ever built to date. GO ROKLIMO! And remember...pictures never do justice.

Several vehicles showed up. Tacoma's, Land Cruisers, Isuzu's, and a Zuke and Jeep all showed. We begain from the staging area on FR231 just westof AZ83. From there we took the longer way up and over Gunsight Pass. (FR231 to 4059 to 4051) Then we decended the west side until we met up with the road to Lopez Pass which we took again up to the top of the mountains. Thes entire was graded to this point so 4-wheeling was 2-wheeling. From Lopez Pass however, the road was it's old self. We decended Lorez into Sycamore Canyon and folowed the trail pack out to the main road into Sahuarita. Sycamore Canyon was GREEN....REALLY GREEN and offered some fun moderate-level 4-wheeling. This was our older Son Tyler's inaugural run in my old '93. He did great, expecially when I led him into a troubled line (on purpose) at the last obstacle. Charouleau Gap with Bryan ("Calamaridog" on IH8MUD) : Trip Leader: John Shotts. Bryan from SoCal was visiting family in Tucson. He looked me up as we know one another from the IH8MUD website, and we went out in our 100's. Bryan has a 2000 with 33's and an OME lift kit. He did great on this difficult section of trail. We ran from Catalina up to the base of the Gap and returned. The 100's made easy work of even the difficult options. We both learned about the differences in our truck's setups. The added lift/travel/tire size of my 100 made easier work of the obstacles, though watching Bryan I was reminded of how capable my 100 was back at it's previous design. These things can wheel. To dispute that fact? No comment. [:>) Trail rating today...mostly a 3.0 though with many 3.5+ options and one 3.5+ must-do obstacle.

Greasy Spoon (3 Forum Invite) 4/06 : Trip Leader: John Shotts. This was trip 3 of 3 for the day. Trip details were posted on the AzLCA, CSCC, and Expedition Portal websites. We had 11 rigs show up on an ideal day weather-wise. We ran the trail from west to east. The Pipeline (also known as Diamondback Gulch) section was mostly untouched and offered good challenges. The Greasy Spoon section was easy (as usual) though a lot of maintenance is being done here due to erosion. Scenery on this trail is amazing. Running it late in the day, as we did, made it extra sweet as those Red Rocks were on fire! Trail rating today...2.5 with optional 3.0's.

We had 11 rigs show up on an ideal day weather-wise. The trail today was packed with Red Jeeps and all of us. Parking at the Seven Apache Pools was insane. As short as this trail is it's still a must-do. There's some challenging lines here and there for the modified truck. Trail rating today...2.5 with optional 3.0's.

We had 11 rigs show up on an ideal day weather-wise. The Arrow was easier than ever. Pinkies have filled in many of the holes, removed one fun ledge, and made more pull-outs. The "Mini Moab" area is almost unchanged and is the highlight if the trail for sure! Trail rating today...2.5 with optional 3.0's.

Oak Creek Homestead 4/06 : It had been 2 years since Becky and I ran this trail. This time, we took the old Stage Road into the high point. We then decended to the gorgeous Oak Creek camping area then back up and out to the Lower Red Rock Loop Road. The difficult shelf section has been improved some due to Jeep Tours now running this trail. It's still difficult though. Trail rating today...2.5 with a 3.0 shelf road. One open-diffed Wrangler struggles all the way up today. We used TRAC with nar a slip.

Van Deren Cabin 4/06 : Becky and I took the quick side trip to Van Deren Cabin when we were on our way to hike Vultee Arch. The 10-minute one-way trip was a great idea. The road is fairly tame (rating today about 2.5+) unless water is running in Dry Creek. The Cabin itself is rustic and preserved thanks to the steel roof that was put on some years back. The shocker? The brank new golf course that back up to the Cabin's back side. Looked really funny. Sweet day!

Tanque Verde Loop FR4405 with AZLRO 3/06 : Trip Leader: Mike McDonald. This was our first trip onto FR4405 by Reddington Pass/Chiva Falls. It was a great trip! Besides the entry and exit Chiva Falls Trail challenges, the Loop provided several other obstacles that made for a great run. The last downhill option before the Loop ends is very difficult and you can expect undercarriage scrapes even if equipped with 35" meats. Unfortunately I didn't get many Rover pics because for much of the trail I was cutting brush to protect my UZJ then playing catch-up to the group. I'll try and swipe some from their site so come back for more pics. There were 6 Rovers and many great people that made for a super trip! Trail rating today...3.0 with a few 3.5-3.5+ obstacles and one 4.0 obstacle, the left side of Three Feathers.

Ruby Road--Summit Motorway (to the US-Mexico Border) 2/06 : It was time! Why haven't we explored the historic area NW of Nogales? With no good answer, we went and did it. Great choice and we'll be back soon! We exited I-19 and headed west on Arivaca Road. About 25 minutes later, after a dippy and twisty ride, we stopped for Coffee in the town of Arivaca. This is where the trip begins. With only so much time on our hands in a day I had mapped out a plan of attack. Ironwood Forest National Monument (BLM) 1/06 : OK, what do you do when you have 2-3 hours to blow on a Sunday afternoon? Hit the IFNM! You can run Avra Valley Road west around Silverbell Mine and come out at the Red Rock exit. Or, you can leave Avra Valley Road, hit Silverbell Road and go through the middle of the Forest and back to Red Rock. Or.....take a topo and explore more. Just make sure you SAVE TIME to check out the remains of Sasco. It's real cool ghost town. One caution on this route...after recent rains the crossing at the Santa Cruz River can require a snorkel or not be passable at all. If that happens you can turn north at the cattle pens and hit the town of Picacho. Trail rating today...2.0 with washboard sections.

Tip Top Mine (and more) with AZLCA, CSC and the AZLRO 12/05 : Trip Leader: ToolsRUs...Kevin, from the AZ Copperstate Cruisers Club. This turned out to be a sweet run. The original plan was to run Table Mesa Road with the AZLRO and AZLCA. At the meeting place the show-ups pow-wowed and decided to forego "plan A" as TMRoad was recently dozed. So, we opted to join the other group that was running a Tip Top Mine type of loop. That decision turned out to be the right one. While the road to Tip Top offered little 4-wheeling, the loop ended at Indian Mesa and that section was fun. Trail rating today...2.5 (with some 3.0 at Indian Mesa).

The Slaughter Ranch is 16 miles east of Douglas and it borders the US-Mexico border. After touring the Ranch we did a loop drive NE to Portal then up FH42 to over 7300-feet into the Chiricahua Mountains. We finished our trip by driving up into the Monument then back down and home. Casner Mountain Powerline with AZLCA 10/05 : Trip Leader: Joe Chott. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip! After being closed for many years, the Forest Service has re-opened this trail by permit-only from May to October. Joe, our trip leader succesfully obtained the valuable permit and away we went. The permit is good for 10 vehicles and 25 people max. The trail itself was amazingly scenic. It devides two wilderness areas...Sycamore Canyon to the west and Red Rock/Secret to the East. Overall difficulty? I'd say about a 3.0+. (Though some very narrow shelf roads create a 4.0 "pucker factor" in my book. I only hope that I can return to the trail to re-run it.
